Independent ISO-certified test laboratory publishes results on the effects of home security software on system performance
AV-Comparatives, the independent, ISO-certified laboratory for evaluating security software, has published the results of its April 2022 performance test, which evaluates the impact of anti-virus software on system performance. Since anti-virus software programs run in the background and consume system resources, AV-Comparatives helps users to rate their anti-virus protection in terms of system speed and performance. The independent test laboratory has set itself the task of providing information on the protection against cybercrime of the best-known security software solutions on the market through systematic tests. The company creates a realistic environment for accurate testing using common application scenarios.
The performance test includes both "Antivirus" and "Internet Security" products for private users, both of which are referred to as security products. Tests performed by AV-Comparatives on each of the products include copying files, archiving/unpacking, installing applications, launching applications, downloading files, browsing websites, and the PC Mark 10 Professional Testing Suite.
Products evaluated by AV-Comparatives for its performance test include:
Avast Free Antivirus, AVG Free Antivirus, Avira Prime, Bitdefender Internet Security, ESET Internet Security, G Data Total Security, K7 Total Security, Kaspersky Internet Security, Malwarebytes Premium, McAfee Total Protection, Microsoft Defender, NortonLifeLock North 360 Deluxe, Panda Free Antivirus , TotalAV Antivirus Pro, Total Defense Essential Antivirus, Trend Micro Internet Security and VIPRE Advanced Security.
AV-Comparatives carried out its performance test in spring on a computer with an Intel Core i3 CPU, 4 GB RAM and SSD hard drives. AV-Comparatives classifies this machine configuration as "low-end". The performance tests were performed on a clean Windows 10 21H2 64-bit system (English) and then with the Consumer Security software installed (with default settings). Tests were conducted with an active internet connection to assess the impact of cloud services/features in the real world. A high-end computer will be used for this AV test in the fall.
Of the 17 security products tested, nine were awarded the highest level, Advanced+, including K7, Panda, ESET, G Data, NortonLifeLock, McAfee, Bitdefender, Avast, AVG. Six products received the second highest level of the Advanced Award, including Kaspersky, VIPRE, Trend Micro, TotalAV, Avira and Malwarebytes. Microsoft and Total Defense received the Standard Award.
"We hope that with these tests we can engage users and vendors to address system security and mitigate the ever-evolving threat landscape," said Andreas Clementi, co-founder of AV-Comparatives. "For these solutions to continue to grow and evolve, testing like this is extremely important to ensure accuracy and accountability."
